I chose Maki because he talked to me about the various parts of fitness.  His explanation of what training would be like was what I was looking for. Plus I wanted someone to be accountable to.  I wasn’t solely focused on getting fit and losing weight gung-ho.  I wanted to be safe, be balanced in my workout approach with strength and aerobic activities.  Also, years ago I had a heart condition which I recovered well from, but, I remained sedentary. I wanted someone who could read me and have the good sense and experience to know where to start with my training and when to up the “ante”. Finally, Maki and I had a good discussion on what I was willing to commit to and we began my training.

I moved from being a couch potato to an active person. I noticed muscle endurance.  This showed up when playing hard with my grandchildren and when pushing the two of them in a stroller up a long rising hill!  An enduring sense of well-being is very motivating!  Then I noticed that I could actually ride a bicycle with strength! I could go on about other improvements.  But more importantly for me, was that he helped me get over the fear of pushing myself.  I improved because he encouraged me through his plan of action and observation of my body’s reaction.

I enjoyed the challenges Maki’s training set up for me because it never made me feel like quitting.  He was so wise as to know that I needed pushing, and recognized when pushing had to stop.  Actually, I like Maki’s sense of humour when I would growl at having to do one more set!  I really enjoyed the variety of exercises that were given.  I enjoyed the education that he gave regarding the exercises. I enjoyed having goals set for performance.

Anyone considering training with Maki Performance Training will get value from the knowledge and experience available.  I saw him train fully fit people and then he’d work with me.  I never felt “less than” when working with Maki as a trainer.  He is so respectful of the place that we are in.  So from my observation and experience Maki Performance Training will meet and better your fitness level; and do so with respect.

Why did you start training with Maki Performance Training?:_I had been with other trainers over the years but had remained a fit fat guy – basically a guy that could play any sport and run some distances but still out of shape.  My hockey playing had started to plateau and my running was not getting better.  I needed some one to help me get stronger, fitter and, if possible, more powerful.

What results have you noticed since your time training here?
: I noticed results right away on the ice.  I got faster and was much harder to push off the puck.  But as Maki continued to train me I noticed a lot more.  I started to lose some weight that I had been carrying for at least a decade.  I started fitting clothes better and, consequently, I started to need new clothes that fit better.  Over the last 2 years I have noticed that my running times are not just better, fully a minute per mile better, but I can run much longer distances.  This year I will have completed 4 half-marathons, more than I did in my previous lifetime combined.   

What do you enjoy most about training with Maki Performance Training?  Maki is a true professional in all sense of the word.  He makes sure you are doing the exercises properly at all times.  Each time I meet with him I know two things are going to happen.  First, he will make me laugh because he believes that having fun should be part of a strenuous workout.  Secondly, he makes every workout completely different so I have no idea what to expect when I show up.  
 
What would you say to anyone who is considering training with Maki Performance Training?
:  I have seen Maki train young kids and mature adults.  I have seen him train very fit people and other people just starting to get back into some fitness routine.  What I have noticed about all of these is that they leave his training sweaty but smiling.  He gets all of them to train hard but to enjoy themselves as well.  I am fortunate that I have been trained by him on both a one-on-one basis and in group training.  He truly excels at both and adapts the workouts to be tailored for whom is training with him.

After two pregnancies and a c-section, I wanted to get into shape and rebuild and strengthen my muscles. I have found through working with Maki that he is passionate about fitness. It shows through his knowledge and the energy and enthusiasm he brings to every session. He makes each workout challenging and creative while keeping your goals in mind. He also places a high value on correct form with each exercise. Maki is very encouraging and motivates me to push past my perceived limits. As a result of working with Maki I have more energy, and my balance, strength and flexibility have improved immensely.

I used to workout at a community centre in Richmond and watched as some personal trainers trained their clients. Most of the trainers were showing their clients the same routine over and over again, but I noticed one trainer showing each of his clients a different routine, which definitely caught my eye.  Maki was that trainer and later, when I finally made the decision to start properly taking care of my body.

Many of my colleagues and friends keep telling me that I look great and so different from "BM" (before Maki). I have before and "later" (6 months after starting to train with Maki) pictures. The results were striking. My entire body is more toned, muscles are more pronounced, my posture changed entirely, I lost 2 dress sizes and I can actually see a waistline. 
I love that Maki takes the time to diversify the training on a regular basis; it makes working out so much more enjoyable. Maki is very patient and encouraging with his clients, while at the same time always expecting them to give their best. I love it that my energy level has increased tremendously and that people almost half my age have trouble keeping up with me!

I started training with Maki almost two years ago now.  I was always at the gym, giving it (what I thought was) my 100%, but I started to get bored and wondered if I was training to my full potential.  A friend of mine mentioned that she and her husband were training with Maki and how much they liked him, so I decided to give him a try.

The results I have noticed since training with Maki are outstanding.  I feel stronger, more confident, and the changes in my physique are amazing. I trained with Maki throughout my recent pregnancy and not only did it keep me strong and healthy, within three weeks postpartum I lost all my pregnancy weight plus a couple of extra lbs!


Maki is very knowledgeable, genuine, and always gives his 100%.  He cares about his clients, has fun with them, and at the same time is able to give direction and that extra “push” we all need.

I have played soccer and been into fitness my entire life. I have had many high level coaches and trained with some great trainers. I was looking for someone who could take my training to the next level. With the career I am in I need to be fit and stay in shape. I was looking to lose about 20lbs and really tone up.  Now,  I actually can see my abs. I have toned up and lost weight. Ladies if you want shoulders Maki is your guy :)  

I like the fact that you never know what to expect. The workouts are hard and he pushes you. It a mental as well as physical challenge.  He listens to the needs of his clients and he designs a program that is suited for what you want and you'll get the results you are looking for. Go for it, challenge yourself ….... you wont be disappointed. Maki's training is the best I have ever had.

I came to Maki because I needed someone to help motivate me and to guide my workouts. My goal was to increase my strength and size for Muay Thai. The problem was that I needed to get fast results. I only had 4 weeks before I was off to Thailand for work. What I accomplished in 4 weeks might have taken me 6 months without Maki’s help.

The results were incredible and were beyond my wildest expectations. In 3 or 4 weeks I gained almost 10 pounds of muscle.  More importantly, I saw an overall increase in strength and general health.  I felt better and had more energy.

Maki creates routines based on your goals.  Then, he not only motivates you, but teaches along the way. He explains the various exercises and helps you understand your body.  As you progress he adapts your routine to match your goals and how your body responds.  He takes a much broader and well rounded approach to helping you accomplish your goals. I would highly recommend Maki if you’re serious about changing your body.
