In This Issue:- OpenersOpenersA New Beginning
I’ve been working in the fitness industry since I was 19 years old, and got my start at the Thompson Community Centre. From there I moved around to various community centres and worked in a number of gyms as a weight room instructor. Fast forward 11 years . . . and here I am, today, engaged in a training business allowing me to practice and work in a field I’m very passionate about.
I decided to start my own personal training operation about 5 years ago with a particular vision in mind. That vision was to become the go-to guy for fitness and performance training in the Richmond area. Breaking it down even further, I had devised a 5-year plan that would take me to where I needed to be. At the start of 2009 I wasn’t sure where I was headed. I had taken big steps forward during the last two years, but, currently, I felt I had stagnated in my journey forward. The place I was in wasn’t allowing me to grow the way I had originally planned--and I felt stifled. Then it happened. Just like that--a change occurred and in an instant I was back on track with a renewed vision and feeling re-motivated. Life is a series of ups and downs. The same can be said with business. With the bad comes the good and with this change I’ve seen that a goal becomes a reality if you work hard. This said, I’m very pleased to announce I have finally come full circle in my 5-year plan and found a new home. I’ve partnered-up with Sensei Cesar Narita to bring to my clients, past and present, a new location for Maki Performance Training. On May 1 Cesar and I signed a three-year lease for a 3800 square foot studio. We’ve been working around the clock for the past 25 days to make the necessary changes and renovations. I’ve been pulling 20-hour days consecutively with friends and family helping out to make the dream a reality. Cesar has been working diligently and has put in even more hours working toward a finished product that will be home to our clients. Work on the studio has been extremely challenging and tiring. We’ve been knocking down walls, tearing out dry wall, painting, painting and more painting, moving equipment, moving it again, and much more. It seems like the more that we do the more there is to do. My wife Catherine is constantly reminding me though that in the end it will be worth all the hours we’ve put in. Special thanks to Catherine for supporting me through this stressful time, and to my parents for their ongoing support and help. I had the pleasure of having my dad come over for 4 days. I don’t get to spend a lot of time with him so it was a really nice chance to spend some quality time together. Thanks to my brothers for pitching in and taking time out of their schedules to come in and get things done when I couldn’t. All of this was a joint effort and I am so grateful to have family that made this vision come to life. Thanks to Adam Santos and Philipe who worked around the clock and my partner Cesar for all the long hours of hard work he put in. I also want to thank all my clients who encouraged and supported me during this time of transition, It is a true honor to have those kinds of clients. Cesar and I have many plans and ideas in store and are looking forward to unveiling them in the future. I look forward to raising the business to new heights and expanding Maki Performance Training. Please stay tuned. I will be letting people know what will be happening in the next month, where the classes will be held, fees, dates and specific changes. We look forward to having our grand opening on July 1st/2nd. Note: The studio is located behind the Ironwood plaza off of Steveston high way.
