Some of you may have noticed that there have been days during the last couple of months when I’ve been hobbling around and wincing as I lead classes and demonstrate certain exercises. This is all the result of preparing my two Sensei’s for up-coming MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fights. I’ve been overseeing their strength and conditioning work as well as lending my body as a ‘training resource’ both inside and outside the ring. See video below of me sparring with one of them.

This has been going on 5 days a week, in conjunction with my own training work. To say that I am a little tired is an understatement--the 3 months has been exhausting. Thankfully the effort has paid off. Sensei Cesar Narita defeated his opponent in the first round in less than 3 minutes via a choke. The other Sensei (Adam) had the misfortune of training very hard only to have his opponent become a no-show on the day of the fight. I’m sure he’ll soon get his chance again to display the skills he has worked so hard to achieve.

New Class (Fight Club)

In the next month I’ll be running a new class designed for fighters and law enforcement officers. I’m only taking one group of 5 dedicated people who want to increase their strength and conditioning for martial arts or work-related activity. The class will be held on Tues/Thurs from 8-9 pm. The cost is $120 for 8 sessions.

Fit Bits:

“Fit bits” are pieces of information pertaining to the fitness profession which I’ve found to be interesting, humorous or just plain ridiculous.

Life is Like a Cup of Coffee

This clip doesn’t have much to do with fitness, just some food for thought.

Aloe Gel Power

Aloe Vera Gel has natural detoxifying powers that ease constipation and cleanse the bowel. This gel is known to benefit those suffering from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). The residues that accumulate within the colon are loosened and naturally dispersed with regular consumption of Aloe Vera Gel; however, it should be noted that high doses can cause diarrhea, abdominal pain and electrolyte imbalance. The gel is said to possess soothing properties that help in colitis, peptic ulcers and digestive tract irritations. Any internal lesions or ulcers may also be healed. Aloe Vera Gel contains some anti-inflammatory fatty acids that alkalize digestive juices and prevent over acidity. Acemannan, found in Aloe Vera, is being studied for its beneficial effects in boosting T-lymphocyte cells that aid the immune system.

Barefoot Training

This will be the focus of a new article down the road. For the time being, here are some quick points on why you should be training barefoot in the gym or outdoors.
  • Wearing shoes can lead to shortening of the tendons and ligaments which weakens the foot and leads to an increase in ankle and foot injuries.
  • Shoes restrict the foot’s ability to move. It impedes it’s mobility to function optimally.
  • Going barefoot increases proprioception in the foot and ankle which can lead to strength gains in the rest of the body.

Maki Performance Training: A Testimonial

I chose Maki because he talked to me about the various parts of fitness.  His explanation of what training would be like was what I was looking for. Plus I wanted someone to be accountable to.  I wasn’t solely focused on getting fit and losing weight gung-ho.  I wanted to be safe, be balanced in my workout approach with strength and aerobic activities.  Also, years ago I had a heart condition which I recovered well from, but, I remained sedentary. I wanted someone who could read me and have the good sense and experience to know where to start with my training and when to up the “ante”. Finally, Maki and I had a good discussion on what I was willing to commit to and we began my training.

I moved from being a couch potato to an active person. I noticed muscle endurance.  This showed up when playing hard with my grandchildren and when pushing the two of them in a stroller up a long rising hill!  An enduring sense of well-being is very motivating!  Then I noticed that I could actually ride a bicycle with strength! I could go on about other improvements.  But more importantly for me, was that he helped me get over the fear of pushing myself.  I improved because he encouraged me through his plan of action and observation of my body’s reaction.

I enjoyed the challenges Maki’s training set up for me because it never made me feel like quitting.  He was so wise as to know that I needed pushing, and recognized when pushing had to stop.  Actually, I like Maki’s sense of humour when I would growl at having to do one more set!  I really enjoyed the variety of exercises that were given.  I enjoyed the education that he gave regarding the exercises. I enjoyed having goals set for performance.

Anyone considering training with Maki Performance Training will get value from the knowledge and experience available.  I saw him train fully fit people and then he’d work with me.  I never felt “less than” when working with Maki as a trainer.  He is so respectful of the place that we are in.  So from my observation and experience Maki Performance Training will meet and better your fitness level; and do so with respect.
