Doug Hepburn is what legends are made of. Strongman is the biography of one of Canada’s greatest athletes. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia with a clubfoot and a squinting eye (which was later corrected with surgery) Doug endured rough times in his life. He struggled to overcome alcoholism, depression, bankruptcy and failed relationships.
Although Doug may not have been a success in a materialistic way, he serves as a great role model and a true crusader for drug-free training. Doug's tale is one that is bittersweet, a story that truly exemplifies what perseverance and goal setting is all about.
The Doug Hepburn Story is written by Tom Thurston and chronicles Hepburn's battle to become the world strongest man. Unheralded in Canada, Doug become the first man to bench press over 500 pounds.
It should be added that this was done without the aid of illegal substances. All he used was large quantities of milk, eggs and bananas. Other feats of strength include a 760 pound squat and a crucifix with 105 pound dumbbells.
For those who are interested in how Doug trained, there is a section at the back of the book which outlines his training programs. If you want to know how a true champion trained this book will reveal Doug’s drug-free strategies. The book also includes some black and white photos of him in action.
Hepburn once asked, “Think anyone will care?" (about his book). If anyone is interested in the lengths one will go to become the best, Strongman is the true testament of a warrior and a man with a character of gold.
